Varying Property Taxes
Local property taxes play a critical role in funding public schools. In Connecticut, 57% of all education funding comes from local property taxes, and funding local public schools is the most significant cost of most cities and towns. However, the amount of tax property owners pay varies greatly between cities and towns – creating a system where some communities are able to fund their schools at higher levels than others.
The map below shows the tax a homeowner would pay on a house assessed at $200,000 in each city and town in Connecticut. Homeowners pay the most in Waterbury, Bridgeport, and New Britain. Homeowners pay the least in Salisbury, Greenwich, and Roxbury.
