We Stand in Solidarity with the APIDA Community

School + State Finance Project

March 18, 2021 - 2 minutes

We at the School and State Finance Project are horrified and disturbed by the events this week in Atlanta, Georgia, and the recent rise in hate crimes against the Asian, Pacific-Islander, and Desi-American (APIDA) community.

Tuesday’s murders – of six Asian and Asian-American women, and two men – are sadly not isolated incidents. Rather, they are the latest examples of both an influx of violence and xenophobia against the APIDA community since the onset of the pandemic, and the pervasive presence of white supremacy and extremism in America.

Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of not only these eight victims, but to every Asian community member who has faced violence and bigotry at the hands of white supremacy. We unequivocally condemn this behavior, and stand in solidarity with the APIDA community.

The School and State Finance Project was founded with the mission to mitigate inequity in school funding and provide opportunities to students no matter their race, ethnicity, community, or background. However, we understand that within this work, systemic racism plays a powerful and harmful role. The most effective public policy solutions recognize the interconnectedness of all forms of discrimination and inequity, and seek to dismantle them.

We recognize the pain, grief, and fear the Asian American community is experiencing right now, and we are committed to using our position, privilege, and power to advance equity for all communities. Every child deserves to grow up in a world free from fear of violence, bigotry, or oppression – and it’s our responsibility to help make that a reality.

In solidarity and support,

The School and State Finance Project Team
